Downtown Bangkok

October 7, 2014

We have arrived in the steamy heat of Bangkok, feeling really excited about the climb ahead, especially knowing we have an incredible group of people who have come together for this adventure.  These are the trips I look forward to, where everyone has done the hard yards, is focused and just love spending time in the mountains.  Most of the guys have been with us at altitude before, so we have all spent a lot of time together, and know what to expect.

Sharon and I are still doing a bit of training, but definitely starting to tone down the intensity. We are heading out for a run in the humidity of Lumpini Park, which is always interesting, between dodging the Tai Chi crowds and watching the huge monitor lizards doing laps in the lake.

We also have a few meetings this week, in preparation for a speaking event in Thailand on the way home.

We will continue on to Kathmandu in a few days, sorting out the final logistics for the trip, before most of the team arrive on Sunday.  We will have a few days to relax, do a final gear inspection, and go through the specifics of the trip, before boarding our Twin Otter bound for Lukla.

On a final note, we will be catching up with our great mates Chris and Lakpa, who along with most of the Himalayan Ascent team have reached the summit of Cho Oyu (8200m), the 6th highest mountain in the world.  Although Lakpa has summitted Cho Oyu a number of this times, this climb marks Chris’s 8th successful summit of an 8000m peak, and she and Lakpa are certainly on their way to climbing all 14.  Check out the climb and Chris’s other amazing feats at www.chrisjensenburke.com.  Well done guys, another phenomenal effort.

Cheers
